Believe it or not, Dudley Hippodrome was once one of the most highly regarded Variety Theatres in the UK…..

As a ‘Show-Girl’ she closed her doors for the last time in 1964, but then for a brief period operated as a casino and until recently as a bingo hall…..How are the mighty fallen.

Now, the sad old lady seems almost definitely destined for the wrecking ball, campaigners to save the building and see her once again put her best foot forward and open as a theatre, having failed to convince the local council that preservation is credible.

The wrecking ball has yet to arrive, but it look’s like she’s heard the news and is slowly decomposing all on her ownsome.

Gradually peeling away, layer by layer, you occasionally glimpse a little bit of her history….Recently revealed, this sign over the main doors hadn’t been seen since the late sixties.

Show me a gambler and I’ll show you a fool, but I can’t help hoping she gets one last roll of the dice……

“C’mon…….Lucky Seven”

Though I usually prefer b & w for shots of old buildings, this time I definitely think the color is the stronger image.

  2. scillagrace

Ah, the color…a splash of gaudy red lips, a swatch of blue on the eyelids, the fading make-up of an old showgirl. Definitely keep the tint; let the old girl have her beauty face!

      It’s strangely upsetting isn’t it?
I was only an ankle-biter when this placed breathed it’s theatrical last, but I’m weirdly attached to the building….Can bricks and mortar have a soul?

Thought it a little extravagant myself! Must confess here that ’tis the red rose of Lancaster I wear and not the white rose of York!!! But, – It’s a long way north of Watford Gap whichever way you look at it!?? !! Have I won that bet yet?

I reckon Lady Luck may well be smiling on you……
My Grandad used to say that Lancashire was like Yorkshire but with rickets…..
Personally, though happiest in sunnier climes altogether, if I do find myself in the UK for any extended period, I’m happy anywhere North of Birmingham….South of the Black Country I tend to get a bit twitchy and belligerent.

I’m embarrassed to admit that because I spend so much time travelling I rarely click the follow button as my service provider is so stingy with what I can download without it costing a fortune…..
So… I tend to simply blitz Freshly Pressed whenever I can access via wifi…(Definitely less frequently than I would like).
The benefit is that I get to see lots of different posts from lots of different bloggers which really keeps things fresh and exciting…

I’ll stick to ‘Au revoir’….(You can never find a circumflex when you need one).

Lucky Seven was not that lucky after all…Too bad 😦 I do prefer the color version, i think it adds more to the feeling of decay…And i must say i love the red that’s peeking through the letters 🙂

      Hey Alex, howzit goin’?
I love that bit of red too……Something a bit visceral about it…..Like the last few drops of the buildings blood.
I’ve been looking at your INCREDIBLE storm shots on my smartphone…can’t wait to get home to have a proper look on a decent screen.

      Hey Cordelia..
That’s thrown the cat amongst the pigeons!
Just when we thought the race was won a late surge from the monochrome throws the bookies into disarray………It’s all going to be down to the final furlong.!

        I STILL can’t decide myself…**??!!
9 times out of 10 with this sort of subject I’d prefer monochrome but there’s just something about the colours in this that insist on ringing my bell…
(I reckon it’s the pigeons that would be most upset)
